“Precision medicine in bipolar disorder across Africa: A systematic review of genetic and biomarker research”
Precision medicine is beginning to change how mental health conditions are understood, diagnosed, and managed. Integrating genomic data, biomarkers, and computational tools into clinical practice could allow treatment to be matched more closely to each patient’s biology.
Biomarker and genomic studies in bipolar disorder are increasing worldwide, but evidence from African populations remains limited.
Our systematic review assessed the evidence on biomarkers, genetics, and precision medicine applications in bipolar disorder in Africa. Of 3,531 records identified, only 14 studies met the inclusion criteria. Most were conducted in North Africa, and Sub-Saharan Africa was underrepresented.
