New publication on pregnancy and chronic myeloid leukemia in Ghana

We are excited to announce a new publication co-authored by the Syreon Research Africa team: “Patient Care of Pregnant Women With Chronic Myeloid Leukemia in a Resource Limited Setting—Case Reports From Ghana.”

The quality of life and family planning for women with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) remain challenging, particularly in resource-limited settings where routine molecular monitoring and pregnancy-compatible treatment options are limited. Although tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) therapies have significantly improved life expectancy and survival among patients with CML, managing the disease during pregnancy presents unique challenges because of the potential risks associated with TKI exposure.

This paper presents three case reports from Ghana of women who were diagnosed with CML prior to pregnancy, highlighting the challenges of balancing effective CML management and ensuring safe pregnancy outcomes. The study emphasizes the importance of counselling from the time of CML diagnosis, preconception disease control, close monitoring during pregnancy, individualized patient care, and timely re-initiation of treatment after delivery.
